current fares as dictated by the rail line.
Excerpt from the “Trans-Siberian Handbook” by Bryn Thomas (4th Edition, 1997) *Cost have increased somewhat, since this time.
How much you pay for a trip on the world's longest railway line depends on the level of comfort you demand, the number of stops you wish to make along the way' and the amount of time you're prepared to put into getting hold of a budget ticket. Although the cheapest tickets for rail travel from Moscow to Beijing or vice versa currently cost US$226 (1997 price) this price does not reflect what you'll end up paying for your trip. There are several major costs to add on: getting to your departure point and getting back at the end of your journey. accommodation in Moscow and Beijing. food etc. In the light of this. the package deals offered by travel agents can he better value than they might at first appear. Even more important. although you may be able to buy a ticket for as little as the above-mentioned price. a ticket is no use without a reservation on the train. Since certain trains may be fully booked for some time in advance, you may find the services of a travel agent invaluable.
