Stop by the legendary Shaman Rock – the rock that symbolizes the beginning of the Angara River.
Check in hotel. Lunch. After lunch meet your guides that will introduce you to details of the
expedition. Time to prepare and pack the equipment and gear onto the snowmobiles and sledge.
Breakfast in hotel. Start out for Snowmobile Safari into the backcountry of Pribaikalsky National
Park along the old forest road towards Maloye Goloustnoye village. During the first half of the day
you’ll make your way over a couple of mountain passes. Lunch to be served in the middle of the
trip. Total length of the day trip is about 80 km. Diner and overnight in a guesthouse.
Breakfast in the village. Packing up. Continue your journey through the Siberian wilderness
towards Kurtun village (*). Lunch break. After lunch the road turns east towards lake Baikal.
Before sunset you will reach the shores of the Great lake. Dinner and overnight at a small tour
* The village of Kurtun is well-known for its remarkable petrogliphs as well as old style Siberian
houses. If lucky we shall meet a powerful Shaman.
From now on your route will run on the ice of lake Baikal. Vast areas of black ice are disrupted by
wide long cracks and impassible ice fields.
Short stop at Krestovsky to stretch your legs at a point called “The Cape of War”. Lunch at the
Sagan-Zaba white marble Cliff (*).
Continue your way north to the Olkhon Gates strait (**) and further into the so-called Small Sea
basin. Dinner Siberian sauna and overnight in a guesthouse in a small village called Sakhurte.
* The Cliff is famed for the world-renowned ancient rock drawings, 2,500 year-old, called “the
pearls of ancient culture and art” that depict scenes from the life of shaman worshippers
** Olkhon Island is the largest one out of the 22 islands of Baikal. Besides, it’s the lake’s
geographic and sacral center. The island is 70 km long, 20 km wide; it is the only inhabited island
on the lake.
We continue our trip along the Small Sea basin – part of the Great lake that is locked between the
mainland and Olkhon island. This area is very popular for ice fishing and you are sure to meet
dozens of fishermen on your way. Stop for lunch opposite the legendary Shaman rock (*).
After lunch continue driving North to Khoboy Crag – the northern most point of Olkhon island.
Dinner and overnight in a tiny village located on the eastern side of Olkhon island.
* The Holly-of-Hollies for Buryat people, generally regarded as one of the 9 sanctuaries of Asia,
once called the Altar of Rock, which is believed to be a residence of the major deity of shaman
worshippers – Khan Khute-baabay who descended from Heaven to the Earth to rule human
** The Cape is located opposite the widest part of Baikal (79,8 km). There’s a special site (a small
platform) that was once used for meditation and performing “tailagans” – gatherings of shamans.
From the cape one can often see Baikal nerpas – fresh-water seals, the lake’s only aquatic animals
